A language of symbols
Critical writing about the artist returns to themes of memory, mortality, transience, religious imagery and fantastic visions. Expressive distortion creates tension between what can be seen and what can only be sensed.

Jan Maria Tomaszewski's paintings evoke a world of symbols, unease, memory and figures suspended between reality and imagination. Here, a painting is more than a representation: it becomes a stage for inner experience.

ART / MEMORY / IMAGINATION
Critical writing about the artist returns to themes of memory, mortality, transience, religious imagery and fantastic visions. Expressive distortion creates tension between what can be seen and what can only be sensed.
The accompanying texts present Tomaszewski as an artist working across painting, graphic art and theatrical imagination. Figures and gestures appear like performers on a stage, inviting the viewer to interpret their stories.
In his text ‘Instead of Thanks’, Jędrzej Karol Lipski, director of the Municipal Museum in Jastrzębie-Zdrój, emphasizes the artist's imaginative power and the viewer's active role in the encounter with the work.
Editorial adaptation based on photographs of the supplied Polish publications: ‘Jan Maria Tomaszewski’, ‘Obrazy dla ducha. Teatr sumienia’ and ‘Zamiast podziękowań’ (Dr Jędrzej Karol Lipski). This is not a verbatim translation.
